Shabbat Chatan · Aufruf invitationשבת חתן
The groom’s Shabbat, everyone gets their own moments.
Shabbat Chatan: the Shabbat when the groom is called up to the Torah. For Ashkenazim, it’s the Aufruf, the Shabbat before the wedding; for Sephardim and Mizrahim, depending on the family, the Shabbat before or the one after, during Sheva Brachot. Each household gets its link on WhatsApp and replies for the service, the kiddush or the meal.

When is the Shabbat Chatan?
During the Shabbat morning service (Shacharit), at the Torah reading: the groom is called up for a blessing (aliyah). For Ashkenazim (the Aufruf), it’s the Shabbat before the wedding; for Sephardim and Mizrahim, depending on the family, the Shabbat before or the one after, during Sheva Brachot. Just enter your family’s date.
Do we have to invite the whole synagogue?
The Shabbat service is open to the whole community: you don’t formally invite to it. The kiddush and the meal are hosted by the family; in the invitation, each household sees the ones it is expected at and says how many people are coming.
Why is candy thrown?
In many synagogues, the congregation throws candy at the groom once he has finished his blessing: a wish for a sweet life. Choose soft candy; children love to collect it.
Does the bride take part?
In Orthodox communities, only the groom is called up to the Torah; before the wedding, the bride is often celebrated separately (many couples don’t see each other the week before). In Liberal or Conservative communities, the couple can be called up together. And if your Shabbat Chatan is after the wedding, both are there.
Do our guests need an account?
No. They open the link they got on WhatsApp and reply, well before Shabbat. That’s all.
